Lead Computational Designer - “High-Rise & Complex Buildings”
Lead Computational Designer
High-rise & Complex Buildings | [Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia]
What if you could write the code that determines how a skyscraper stands?
As Lead Computational Designer within our High-Rise & Complex Buildings team, you will be at the frontier of how Ramboll designs. You will bring parametric thinking and analytical rigour to some of the most technically complex building projects in the region, leading a team of computational designers and working shoulder-to-shoulder with engineers, BIM modellers, architects and clients. This is a role where your work does not just support the design process, it shapes it.
High-rise buildings, done well, are one of the most powerful tools we have for building sustainable, liveable cities. With more than 300 tall building projects globally, our High-rise & Complex Buildings team integrates structural, MEP, facade, digital and sustainability expertise from concept to completion, because the relationship between a building’s structure and its services is where real value is won or lost. Data-driven, computationally advanced, and benchmarked against decades of global experience, we design with purpose for the people and cities that need these buildings to perform for generations. If you want work that genuinely challenges you, this is where you come.
The role
As Lead Computational Designer, you will drive the development and application of computational methods across a portfolio of high-rise and complex building projects. You will take technical ownership of 3D modelling, visual programming, finite element analysis and optimisation studies, while developing the wider team’s capabilities and representing Ramboll’s computational design practice both internally and externally.
This is a role for someone who sees computation not as a tool, but as a design language, and who is motivated to push what that language can do in the hands of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
How you will contribute
Computational design and analysis
- Lead 3D modelling on Rhino and visual programming on Grasshopper across live project work
- Prepare and manage finite element analysis models and optimisation studies
- Research and develop computational approaches to project-specific design challenges
Technical leadership
- Provide technical leadership to the computational design team, setting standards and mentoring individuals
- Drive the general development of the team’s capabilities through individual learning and shared practice
- Represent the future of design both internally across Ramboll and externally to clients and collaborators
Collaboration and delivery
- Work closely with engineers, BIM modellers, architects and clients to integrate computational methods into project delivery
- Contribute to live project work to meet the broader goals of the team and the wider company
- Lead multidisciplinary collaborations with other Ramboll departments
- Prepare reports and presentations to communicate computational work on projects clearly and effectively
Qualifications and Experiences:
- A bachelor’s degree in Architectural, Civil or Structural Engineering
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in design
- Experience in a consultancy firm is preferred
- Strong proficiency in parametric and computational design software, particularly Rhino and Grasshopper; knowledge of design optimisation applications is highly regarded
- Familiarity with coding languages such as Python and/or C# is a plus
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex computational work to technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong attention to detail
