      Why renovate rather than build new?

      The built environment is responsible for 40% of global C02 emissions, 33% of global waste, and nearly 50% of all extracted materials.

      Prioritising renovation and transformation over building new plays a vital role in decarbonising the construction sector and its gaining momentum. Renovation usually requires less materials than new build and is therefore less exposed to the risk of supply chain disruptions caused by current geopolitical issues. In addition, renovation is often more cost effective and attractive to tenants than building new.

      Legislation like the EPBD (Environmental Performance of Buildings Directive) means that carbon will be measured and tracked for new buildings. Furthermore, the EU ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme), which targets high carbon materials, could significantly increase construction supply chain costs. The business case for renovation is clear – the time is now to respect, review and renew.
